Berman Effect
Rich Berman has discovered that a particular chemical (Freon 11) boils
when subjected to a magnetic field. He is looking for investors and a team to patent the
process and harness the effect to generate power.

NOTE: The photo of the test tube and flame is not of Rich's phenomenon,
but was taken from another context for illustration purposes. The flame is not required to
make the chemical boil.
- Q. Is it a DC or AC magnetic field that creates the effect?
A. Straight DC magnetic field.
- Q. Does Berman have a patent?
A. Not yet; has gone part way but lacks funding for lawyers.

The particular chemical responsible for this claim is Boron Sulfide and can be obtained from many
sources. To avoid confusion, it is best to identify it by its chemical formula. Warning! - This
substance has a very strong and disagreeable odor. ;)

Rich Berman's Response
"Boron Sulfide is not the chemical I have been working with." (Rich Berman, phone

Subject: question about Berman effect
Mr. Berman,
As a chemist, I am intrigued by the Berman effect as mentioned on the web site at http://acapitalist.com
Would you be willing to divulge which compound exhibited the effect? Of course if you are
in the process of obtaining intellectual property protection, I will understand if you decline my
request.
I am particularly interested in the phenomena because it might serve as a means toward a "Maxwellian
Demon", i.e. a process for obtaining useful energy from ambient heat without the need for a
temperature difference. In other words, violation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics. If
this topic interests you, please see my Maxwells_Demon yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Maxwells_Demon
Despite Patrick's ("mcsceptic2000") skeptical comments, I want to keep an open mind
about the Berman effect. I would speculate that this effect might occur via a chemical
process in which the magnetic field induces molecules of the liquid to rearrange from a
non-magnetic isomer into a paramagnetic isomer. If the magnetically-induced isomer happened
to have a lower boiling point than the original form, boiling would occur spontaneously, causing
the bulk of the liquid to cool (energy is needed for molecules to change phase from liquid to gas,
e.g. when rubbing alcohol evaporates off of skin; this energy comes from the thermal energy of the
bulk liquid).
According to my proposed description, the Berman effect would not violate the 1st law of
thermodynamics -- it would not create energy from "nothing". However it would
still be very useful because it would create a spontaneous temperature difference! (between the
warmer environment and the cooler bulk liquid). This temperature difference, even if only a
few degrees, could be used to drive a Stirling engine or other heat engine. The net result
would be to generate useful energy from a uniform temperature heat source (ambient heat).
Such a process would be classified as "perpetual motion of the 2nd kind".
Just one detail remains to close the loop: the gaseous magnetically-induced isomer would need
to covert back to the original liquid isomer (otherwise the system would halt once the liquid was
all converted).
Have you measured any temperature differences consistent with my proposed description?
Anyway, I would be interested in helping you to explore this phenomena, and I would share all
results with you if you are interested in collaborating. If you wish, I would be willing to
sign a non-disclosure contract to protect your patent/intellectual property rights.
sincerely,
Leo C.

OPEN LETTER
To those who have written me about my discovery, I would like to
take this time to thank you for your interest.
While I invite debate about my find, I must caution you that the
only facts I have given out, are what I have published on my web site. I have not
given anyone the name of the liquid, or any other information that would lead them to any
conclusions, other than to the potential benefits of the liquid.
To those who believe I should describe the liquid, I can only
remind you that I am trying to get funding, and in order to protect myself, I must
wait. I have been told that I should not have even published my findings, because of
the potential problems that could arise in giving any insight to my discovery. It was
my decision to publish my discovery, because I believe even the concept should be debated.
It is important to understand that if this find turns out to be
true, the world will be changed forever. If this find, for any reason, will not
produce the output needed for a reliable source of energy, we must keep looking 'till we
find it.
I believe I have found it.

Subject: Re: Boiling effect unanswered question
Mr. Berman's first email to me after hearing about my interest informed me that "the effect
is definitely real", and then asked for money. I replied to him that I needed more
background information before I could make a convincing case to others (and myself) in order to
raise start-up funds. I even offered to travel to his location at my expense to witness a
demonstration of the "Berman effect. But since then I have not heard another word from
him. He even refuses to answer the simple question: does the tube of mystery liquid get hot?
Seems like he is only interested in "investors" who don't ask questions -- in other
words "suckers". If you want to preserve your credibility, you should investigate
these claims yourself before advertising them in your newsletter. An easy way to do this is to
pose as an interested (but non-technical) person, with spare money to invest, and contact the
claimants using an alias and different email address. Ask some naive questions and see what
replies you get. Then you get to see their true colors.
If you don't want to help scammers find victims through your newsletter, you should do a little
detective work before advertising their claims.

Rich Berman's Reply (April 5, 2003, by phone)
When Rich saw Leo C. posting these negative things about him on the Internet, he lost his trust
relationship, and Rich decided not to work with him.
He is considering a couple of other companies who seem amenable. It's not that he requires
money before he divulges adequate information.
"One thing I didn't do, is, I didn't measure if it increase in temperature."
"When I saw this work, I took photos of everything, took in witnesses, then boxed it up for
safe-keeping.
"It doesn't matter if it increases one degree or ten. The fact is that it works."
Q. Then how do you convey energy?
A. "The liquid moved up the tube. It's using more space. When you have something
like that, you have a pressure involved. There are lots of things you can do with that
pressure.
"It doesn't matter if you have a small magnet or large?
"There is a physicist that agreed with me that it doesn't matter if it's one degree or
five. Once you characterize the phenomenon you can economize with variations.
"Have not measured weather gas is being emitted, hence material is being depleted.
"I'm in it for the money, there is no question there. It looks like this could be the
mother lode."

Subject: From Rich Berman (the berman effect)
To the interested
I now see that I do not have the capital OR GUTS to keep the fight. I have allowed a firm
to check into my discovery and have been given a report that they (THEY) could not reproduce
the effect. Just for the record, THE EFFECT IS REAL.
It is with great relief that I now put my find and notes into public domain, with the hope
that others will take this and perhaps
feed the world.
For you who try to discourage the other dreamers, I have this to say. (STAY AT HOME
BE
SAFE)
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO THREATEN
( YOU LOST).
The chemical is FREON 11
THE FREON 11 WILL BOIL WITHOUT TOUCHING ANY PART OF THE CONTAINER IT IS IN, using a magnet
field.
I have only found this effect using FREON 11, and the effect is not seen 100% of the time.
I believe that this is because my magnet field is not stable enough.
Thank you for your interest
